Building a Beef Stud Programme in the Free State

Our Bonsmara/Simmental stud programme is underway. We look at what makes a quality beef stud operation and why the Free State is one of the best environments for it.

A beef stud programme is one of the highest-value activities a commercial farm can undertake. When done correctly, it transforms a standard cattle operation into a premium genetics business — selling breeding stock to commercial farmers at significantly higher margins than feedlot cattle.

Why Bonsmara and Simmental?

The Bonsmara is one of South Africa's most respected beef breeds — developed specifically for African conditions. It combines the hardiness of Sanga cattle with the production qualities of European breeds. Bonsmara bulls are in consistent demand from commercial farmers across the country.

Simmental brings size, growth rate, and excellent meat quality. The crossbreeding of Bonsmara and Simmental genetics produces animals that combine the adaptability of the Bonsmara with the growth performance of the Simmental — a combination well suited to the Free State's mixed farming conditions.

The Stud Development Process

Building a stud is a patient, multi-year process. Bulls must go through a rigorous maturation programme before they are ready for sale — typically 12 months or more. During this period, performance data is recorded: growth rates, feed conversion, frame score, and scrotal circumference.

Only bulls that meet the performance benchmarks set by the Stud Breeders' Society of South Africa qualify as registered stud animals.

The Free State Advantage

Bethlehem's natural grassveld, reliable rainfall, and moderate temperatures make it an excellent environment for beef cattle. Our grazing camps rotate herds across the natural veld, allowing grass to recover fully between grazing cycles — a practice that improves both animal condition and long-term soil health.

A well-managed beef stud programme, anchored by quality genetics and good record-keeping, is a long-term asset that grows in value with every season.
